Madden NFL 10

As certain as the temperature turn cooler or cold in winter, EA Sports is bound to release another version of Madden football on consoles. In this instance, the release is for the next-gen PS3 console system.

The newest edition of Madden football is the most visceral experience yet and EA Sports boasts that it is the most realistic yet. In some ways it may well be, but in others, this game fumbles that ideal away.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh Parts 1 and 2

Developed by Deadline Games A/S, Watchmen: The End is Nigh is a hardcore mature action brawler featuring bloody visceral combat in settings which are reminiscent of the film. Watchmen: The End is Nigh Part 1 takes place more than a decade before the film’s main story, delving into the partnership of urban vigilantes Rorschach and Nite Owl before the hero-banning Keene Act. In Part 2, the duo team up again as Rorschach contacts Nite Owl to help solve the case of a missing girl, Violet Greene.
Patrick Wilson and Jackie Earle Haley, stars of the Watchmen film, also lend their voices to the respective roles of Nite Owl and Rorschach in both episodes of Watchmen: The End is Nigh. Both Rorschach and Nite Owl are playable characters and each features distinct combat abilities, as well as a collection of each of their own unique finishing moves — such as Rorschach’s Rage and the technical prowess of Nite Owl’s Owlsuit.
Watchmen: The End is Nigh features a split screen co-op multiplayer option in addition to a single-player experience with an A.I. partner. Staying true to the tone of the film on which it’s based, Watchmen: The End is Nigh features stunning graphics in moody settings mixed with brutal combat. Players can take on as many as twenty enemies at the same time in bloody, street-fighting gameplay action. The game contains nine chapters, built around events referenced in the film, allowing for hours of intense gameplay.

It Came From Japan #4 – Xenogears

After the phenomenal success of Final Fantasy VII in 1997, many Western gamers — now enthralled by this new found wonder of the Japanese RPG — found themselves wondering just what else Square (soon to be SquareEnix) had up their sleeves.

In response, Square released Xenogears on the PS1 in February of 1998.

Considered high-brow, deep and, to some degree, irreverent, a section of the gaming public were shocked that, instead of another tale of huge swords, friendship and personal sacrifice, they got a convoluted and abstract story that questions the existence of God, waxes on about philosophical doctrine and wonders aloud about man’s evolution.

To this day, Xenogears is held very dear in the hearts of its many fans, seen as a work of immense complexity and acute intelligence. When Famitsu rates a game #16 in a list of the greatest games of all time, you know you have something special on your hands.

Legend told of a great warrior from the east

Xenogears dutifully walks the typical Japanese RPG party-line in part, ticking off many of the mandatory check-boxes and themes along the way. Troubled teen? Present. Worldwide struggle? Check. Giant mechs that can be used in combat? Hell yes. However, where the game differs from the standard fare of the time — and even the RPGs we play today — is how creator Tetsuya Takahashi deftly crafted a multifaceted treatise on life, death, the concept of mind and memory; all the while heavily infused with philosophical and religious themes that would make most theology students balk.

So, it’s not just about giant human-controlled robots smacking seven shades out of each other? Hardly.

Your technique is magnificent…

Xenogears is presented in the typical 2D sprites on an isometric 3D background manner. Though there are nine playable characters, the story focuses on Fei Fong Wong and his internal plight after waking up with no memories in a village under attack. Think Jason Bourne but with a pony-tail and the ability to control robots.

Stripping away the philosophical elements (which we’ll get to), the underlying plot of Xenogears is actually fairly rudimentary stuff. Two factions, engaged in an internecine war — each using excavated mechs to fight their battles so as to minimise human casualties — both are equally affected when the balance of the conflict tips toward one side thanks to a mysterious force known as the Gebler arriving and sticking their nose in.

Without giving away too much, Fei turns out to be a sort of quasi-messiah character with a lot of strange concepts featured such as, but not limited to, the existence or even death of God (the salient tenants of Nietzsche’s nihilism), the emergence of the “Superman” (Nietzsche again, this time his thoughts on the übermensch), the concept of man “evolving” beyond his current shortcomings (Jung’s theory of collective consciousness and shadow - the idea of change instigated by one’s fears and hatreds) and a whole bunch of Freudian psychoanalysis mumbo-jumbo regarding the id and why we do what we do. In fact, “Id” even turns up as a character although, in reality, it’s actually Fei with his memories intact. Like we said, it’s a little out there.

You must choose the sword or the ball. I can not make this choice for you …

Xenogears nearly never saw a Western release due to its stance on religion and what some felt was the product of Takahashi-san spending too long in his garden eating numerous odd mushrooms. It did get a release, however, and was lapped up by critics who enjoyed its high-concept musings and infectious gameplay. In fact, with all this talk of cultural memes, predetermination and regressed memories, we’ve kinda glanced over the fact that, cosmic existentialism aside, the game plays great with an assortment of engaging battles on offer and some truly impressive graphics for its time. As previously mentioned, Famitsu holds it in extreme high regard while the sales figures aren’t too shabby either with the original and subsequent Greatest Hits re-release clocking up 1.2 million in sales.

Though released on the Japanese PSN in June of 2008, we’ve yet to see a Western PSN release of the game. It could happen of course. After all, there is no translation required, and with Final Fantasy VII proving such a hit when it finally did appear on the download platform, we can envision Xenogears also raising its philosophical head in the West in the future.

Sequel wise, it gets a little complicated. Moving to Namco after his stint with Square, Takahashi-san continued the premise of Xenogears with the long running, and also much-adored, Xenosaga. More reimaginings than official follow-ups to Xenogears, Takahashi-san himself admitted that, due to the switch of publisher, it just wasn’t possible to continue where he left off. Xenosaga has spawned a multitude of spin-offs and editions with some gracing the PS2 over the years. Could there be a Xenosaga game on the PS3? Though not impossible in Japan, it’s unlikely such a title would hit our shores considering the series is quite the niche product. As a series it has also favoured the DS as a platform of late.

As for a bone fide Xenogears sequel, it’s pretty much out of the question when you take into account Takahashi-san’s studio allegiances and what he’s done with the “Xeno-” brand-name since directing the groundbreaking original back in 1998. At this rate, all we can hope for is a PSN release like what Japan got.

If you like games that make you think and treat you like an adult, Xenogears comes highly recommended.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Hands-On

We just received a near-complete version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and wasted no time donning a cape and leaping into the ring.

Capcom may have announced Marvel vs. Capcom 2 only two short weeks ago, but already a fully playable build of the game has landed on our desks. Despite being clearly labelled as a "preview build," the game seems to be feature-complete, and we're happy to report that we didn't notice a single bit of slowdown in what we played. Given the late-June release, which was recently confirmed in a Marvel financial report, the game is looking in good shape at this stage. We thought that we'd mark the occasion with an in-depth play test while also trying to answer some of the questions that you guys posted on the site.

First off, this is a top-notch conversion of the Dreamcast classic. That may be something that we've come to expect from Capcom rereleases and updates, but it's still no less impressive to see one of the company's flashiest 2D fighters re-created with such attention to detail. It also has enough to make it worth reinvesting for fans, considering the online multiplayer, smoother sprites, and new widescreen support, in addition to having all 56 characters unlocked from the beginning.

We're also impressed with how well the game plays on the standard PlayStation 3 pad. It helps that MVC2 uses a four-button setup for punches and kicks, rather than six, which makes it much easier to pull off combos and special moves. One of the hallmarks of the series is the multicharacter tag-team setup, this time using three characters, and we found it very easy to pull in these extra characters using the standard shoulder-button configuration. We weren't sent the Xbox 360 version--presumably the D pad won't be quite as good as Sony's--but we're impressed with how the setup works, and those who don't own sticks won't be quite as handicapped as they were in Street Fighter IV.
The conversion to the PS3 has also seen the development team at Foundation 9 clearly try to pander to hardcore and casual audiences alike. You can choose from three different sets of character graphics; crisp new sprites are set as default, but the classic sprites from the original are available along with smoothed-out hybrids. The game does this by using 3X bilinear filtering for the crisp sprites and 2X bilinear filtering for the smooth ones, with a number of tweaks used to perfect the look of each. The results are great, adding a new visual sheen for people used to HD graphics and original sprites for those who can still remember every move from the Dreamcast. The final tweak has been to adapt the game for widescreen displays, which offers you a greater view of the background, but purists can enable a 4:3 display mode to match the arcade original.

One area that we didn't get to test thanks to the debug hardware was the online mode, although the options were all there in our build. The game will offer friendly and ranked matches, the latter of which are called scoreboard matches. Scoreboard matches will count toward your worldwide ranking, which you can check from the main screen itself. Then there's also a Training mode in which you can try out specific moves and combos, and a Points mode, wherein you play through the arcade game to earn points. It's worth noting that all 56 characters are available from the get-go, so there's not much point playing through the Arcade mode alone, and unlike the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 versions of the game, we couldn't see the shop feature to buy new costumes.

Capcom has stated that the game will cost $15 on the PSN in the States and 1,200 Microsoft points on Xbox Live Arcade, and there's a demo out on the PlayStation 3 right now. We'll have more in the run-up to release, but in the meantime check out the game in action by watching the exclusive video above.

Fat Princess Patched, Go Stuff Her Face

I heart Fat Princess. While the game has been plagued with multiplayer lag and connection issues like a large number of recent PS3 releases, it’s still a damn fun game. Titan Studios whipped up a patch to fix all the problems you’ve been experiencing in a timely manner and it’s now available for you to download. Fire up the game and get her all fixed up.
Our review will be coming shortly for Fat Princess. Could I have reviewed the game prior to the patch? Sure. Do I think waiting a week to give a better representation of the game was a better decision? Yes, I do. Make sure to check back early next week for our full review. Based on the first sentence here, you can get a general feel of how the review will go.

Dragon Age: Origins Delayed

Yet another game hit by this delay spree that's going around like wildfire. It's not that bad though, I don't think they could quite justifiy the whole "we don't want to compete with Modern Warfare 2" spiel what with being an RPG and all. What was a set release for October 20th is now been pushed back to November 3rd. That is, for the Xbox360 and PC versions. the PS3 version is slated "sometime later in November."

It's been one hell of a year for AA and AAA title delays...

The new Gundam PS3 Game looks even more promising

wrote about it a couple weeks ago, and now, thanks to an extensive update of the official website, we know quite a lot more about Mobile Suit Gundam: Battlefield Record U.C.0081, the new PS3 Gundam game that will be released in Japan on September the 3rd.

While, for now, it's still under the radar of most western gamers, I'm hoping that Namco Bandai will announce a western release the game during their press conference at Gamescom, on the 19th. After all Gundam is a quite famous IP even in the US and in Europe, so I'm pretty confident that we'll see the game even here (or else...).

The game itself will feature more than 70 different Mobile Suits (Gundam's definition of a military robot, for the three gamers in the world that aren't familiar with the IP), more than 110 customization components and 80 different weapons, providing an almost unparalaleled depth.

One of the most interesting features that has just been fully unveiled, though, is the Team Control System, that will allow the player to customize and command not only his two companions on the battlefield, but also the other units around him.

Through a complex configuration screen named "Command palette" we will manage the battlefield instructions that we'll be able to issue, including formations, coordinated attacks (both ranged and melee), but also artillery strikes and airstrikes against the most resilient enemy targets. In total we'll be able to issue 34 different commands to our allies. I think such a level of complexity and depth is pretty much a first in a game of this kind.

Add to this the involving and realistic story, playable from both factions' point of view, the simulative gameplay and the lovely anime cutscenes, and you'll probably understand why I'm so excited about this title.

Now we can only wait and hope to hear some good news on the 19th. In the meanwhile my advice is to give the official website a good look. Even if it's in japanese, it's worth it.
